Predictions Round 4
Alan Quinlan shares his predictions for Round 4
We’re now past halfway in the RBS 6 Nations and the destination of the title is starting to become a little clearer with three teams still very much in contention.
Tissot ambassador and former Ireland flanker Alan Quinlan has given his predictions on how the fourth round of matches will turn out as Wales host Ireland on Friday night before France travel to Italy and then Scotland look to end their Twickenham hoodoo against England.
Ireland in good shape
I think Ireland have responded well after the disappointment of losing to Scotland in the first game and were pretty impressive in Rome and then at home to France. It’s tricky going into a game like the Wales one when you know that a win could set you up for a decider and you are trying to get to the last day.
There will be a lot of pressure on Wales at Principality Stadium because they have to go to France in their final game. They will be so determined at home and there are a lot of Welsh guys who will know how important this is to get on that Lions Tour.
I think from a rugby point of view Wales are low on confidence so for Ireland they have to get off to a good start. They know what it’s like playing in Cardiff but they will have to play very well.
I think with Wales being low on confidence then Ireland can win, but there will be a serious reaction from Wales.
As long as Johnny Sexton comes through and they have their full squad though, Ireland have every chance.
France to bounce back
Italy have had some success against France but I just wonder if they can go to the well again after the game at Twickenham.
Physically that will have taken its toll on them, and they will be going up against a big, physical France team. They’ve got two weeks and they will take confidence from their performance at Twickenham.
It’s going to be difficult to raise their game to that level again though and I’ve been impressed by France.
I think they will be a bit stronger this time so I’d say they are favourites.
Scotland’s wait to go on
This Scottish team is definitely capable of frustrating anyone and being right in the game. I’ve been really impressed by the Gray brothers, John Barclay and Ryan Wilson so they definitely have a chance.
The worry is in the set-piece though, the scrum has been a struggle for a lot of the Championship. If they can get parity there then they have a chance but it won’t be easy. Especially with England getting players back.
I have a feeling that England might just be a bit too powerful for them in the end.
It’s a bigger game than it has been for a number of years though. There’s a Triple Crown at stake and if Scotland do win they have a great chance of winning the whole thing with Italy at home the following week.
Bonus points and points difference could come into play if they get the result, but I just think England will have enough.
